When a truck hits a passenger vehicle from behind, the truck driver can usually walk away unharmed.
What causes a rear-end truck accident?
A rear-end truck accident can occur due to several reasons:
- Distracted truck driver: A truck operator who is not paying attention to the road ahead — whether texting, talking on the phone, eating, or distracted by another activity — can fail to see traffic stopped ahead. This can lead to disaster.
- Drug or alcohol intoxication: It’s an unfortunate fact that some truck drivers consume alcohol or drugs on the job. When they do, their judgment is poor and their reaction time is slower.
- Tired driver: Truck drivers are often fatigued, with San Jose, California at the end of a long trip from another state. Although drivers are required to get enough rest under federal trucking regulations, they still may not do so, and could be driving tired. This puts them at risk of making serious driving errors.
- Speeding: A truck driver who drives faster than the speed limit or too fast for weather conditions may be unable to stop the truck in time, resulting in a collision with the vehicle ahead.
- Slick roads: When the weather is wet, as it often is in San Jose, all drivers need to slow down. When a driver does not operate their truck at a safe speed for slick road conditions, it can lead to a rear-end truck accident.
- Faulty brakes: When the truck brakes fail, the driver may try to bring the vehicle to a stop. Commercial trucks are equipped with several parking systems, but when the service brakes fail it can lead to a deadly collision.
